In the Bronze Age, Egyptians were well positioned to trade with their neighbors. Because the Nile Valley provided the only “pinch point” for trade goods from the sub-Saharan regions, the Egyptians were ideally placed to capitalize on the opportunity. Their trading expeditions spanned the region of the Red Sea and Sudan and searched for exotic and valuable commodities. Among the most sought after commodities were gold, ostrich feathers, and ivory.
The kings of Ancient Egypt had their own responsibilities, such as protecting the sand. The goddess, Ma’at, had a large role in this, as she was the patron of fertility and the kings were associated with the gods Osiris and Horus. Ultimately, these two goddesses were intertwined in the life of every Egyptian and were responsible for their prosperity.
The Egyptians were also able to optimize their agricultural production and adapted many Asian techniques in their crafts. Their massive stone building techniques exploited the centralized state and its massive labour force, and required remarkably high technical skills. Although the Egyptians’ greatest achievements have not yet been completely explained, the construction of the great pyramids is an astonishing achievement. If we look at the building techniques used to construct them, we can see that Egyptians incorporated a wide range of Asian methods and techniques.
The New Kingdom rulers were laid to rest in deep rock-cut tombs. These tombs can still be found in the Valley of the Kings. Although many of these tombs were raided and destroyed, Tutankhamen’s tomb was relatively intact. His burial place is near Thebes. Nonetheless, these tombs are rarely visited today because of the fact that they were destroyed centuries ago. This has led to speculation that the tomb was never fully discovered.
